why we love this cool little neighbourhood!

Pererenan is renowned worldwide as one of the hottest new tourist spots. See why we love it!

Here’s your ultimate guide to Pererenan, Canggu – make sure you read it, as it’s got helpful tips on where to stay, eat, shop and play!

Welcome to Canggu’s little sister, a tranquil, hipper, and somewhat (for now, at least) quieter neighbourhood. These are my top must-dos if you visit Pererenan or spend your Bali holiday here.

As a person who works, lives and plays in Canggu, I’ve seen the area evolve from a sleepy tourist village that flew very low under the radar to a full-on pulsing, vibrant, trendy area with cafés, beach clubs and more shops than ever. And while Canggu is a relatively large area stretching from Berawa to Seseh, it has become too hectic for some people, with congested traffic and a high presence of Instagram influencers. Pererenan, on the other hand, has still managed to cling onto a shred of its past glory, and for me, that’s enough to call it one of Canggu’s prettier and still rustic parts. Yes, there are green shoots of overdevelopment, but it still has lovely places to dine, cafés to chill out, gorgeous Pererenan Villas, and, of course, the beach and incredible surf! I visit Pererenan at least twice a week and have explored most of the cafés, alleyways, and side streets, uncovering hidden gems just waiting to be discovered. So, if you want an accurate and factual insight into Pererenan, here are my thoughts on why it’s such a cool little neighbourhood.

The Best of Pererenan, Canggu – An Overview

Best Villa:   Villa Panas Sekali

What I love about Villa Panas Sekali is its simplicity. Clean, modern architecture that blends current design trends that are easy on the eye with family-friendly interiors. Whilst the location is not right on the beach, it’s a quick 5-minute drive, but this does have its advantages on privacy, and you’re not near too many restaurants or beach clubs where the music goes on till all hours of the early morning. Panas Sekali has a bunk room for kids, a lovely pool and garden space where you don’t feel cramped (as can happen in many villas); it’s Australian-managed by the team at Bali Villa Escapes, so you know the services and facilities will be top-notch, and you have an account manager in Bali you can easily contact.

Best Restaurant:   Bokashi

I visit Bokashi to look at the gorgeous interiors and the design. Plus, once you’re inside, it’s so peaceful and private – a great escape from the sometimes hectic Pererenan. It’s an idyllic space recently built with no expense, creating an excellent Balinese wood pavilion style. The vibe and ambience are charming, and I definitely recommend coming here for a meal. There’s also a small grocery store where you can buy a few organic and healthy treats to bring back to your Canggu villa rental for snacks. If you’re outside Canggu, come here for the experience; it’s worth the journey! The menu is extensive, as are their homemade cocktails (perfect to come for the girls before a night out) – try the Lady Oolong or the Vanilla Margarita. It’s yummy!!

Best New Café @ 2025:  7AM Bakers

It had to happen! 7 AM Bakers is so popular in Umalas that adding a second location in Pererenan was a no-brainer. 7 AM is the perfect spot for coffee, delicious sandwiches, croissants, and yummy cakes, all baked fresh in-house. You won’t find a better spot to park for a few hours, catch up on your work, or smash down an espresso after a morning surf at Echo Beach. Their bread, like the sourdough, baguettes, and bagels, is great to take away back to the villa, and if you are going to treat yourself, then the almond chocolatine is a must.

The Best Cafés in Pererenan

1.  Keen Café

I went to visit the new Keen Café because I saw loads of hype on social media from the owners about this place, and let me start by saying what a pleasure it was to have a spot of lunch here. The relaxed, island-chic vibe and the simple menu tick all the right boxes for a hungry guy like me. The service was spot on, and the coffee was perfect! And prices are super-reasonable. I went for the vegan big brekky and a decadent Snickers smoothie bowl – yummy!

2.  ST. ALi

ST. ALi is an institution in Pererenan, and if you happen to be from Melbourne, you’ll know it’s the same people who were involved in the super hip St Ali in South Melbourne; so you know the coffee, food, and the vibe are going to be delish, relaxed and oh so Pererenan. At St Ali, they only roast and serve ethically sourced and sustainable coffee beans, and the taste is spot on. With coffee beans from all over the Indonesian archipelago, like Java and Sulawesi, and even local areas in Bali like Kintamani, people come here just for those great tastes./ But there’s so much more to St Ali, like the tempting dishes we tasted, such as chilli scrambled eggs and the blueberry & ricotta hotcake. The place is packed the whole day, and the vibe is friendly and casual, with reasonably priced dishes.

The Best Restaurants in Pererenan

Woods

I love going to WOODS simply because of the vibe. As expected, everything is made of wood and has an earthy, natural feel. For the greenies out there, no trees were cut down; instead, they built around the current trees, keeping the natural environment. WOODS offers both a breakfast and lunch menu, as well as a separate dinner menu. You have to try their Belgian waffles for breakfast, and for lunch, the beetroot ravioli is amazing!! The steak and ribs from Australia are delicious for dinner, and there’s a decent cocktail list for pre-dinner drinks. The extensive menu has salads, smoothies, matcha teas, cheese platters, and many yummy desserts.

Dishes are priced between $10 and $25, making it a great value for money.

Things to do in Pererenan

1. Morning surf at Pererenan Beach

Pererenan Beach has some top surfing – both a left and a right-hander. It’s also suitable for beginners and is extremely popular. You can hire boards and instructors by the hour, but a word of warning: there are rocks around the surf break, so take care! It’s a black sand beach that stretches 500 metres from Echo Beach and is dotted with local cafés where you can also grab a meal or a beer for sunset.

2. Visit Tanah Lot Temple on the water

Make the day trip to the holy Hindu Tanah Lot Temple on the water in Tabanan, about a 20-minute drive north of Pererenan (depending on traffic). Tanah Lot is a picturesque temple situated on a large rock off the ocean, with crashing waves that make it the ideal backdrop for a sunset photo. You can amble around the garden area of the temple grounds and even walk to the temple on the rock at low tide to get a better look and some holy water sprinkled on you. Tanah Lot is one of Balis’s most famous temples, and for a cultural experience, it is a must-visit.

3. Head to Canggu Central for some shopping

Canggu’s main Jalan Batu Bolong area is jam-packed with shops, cafés and family restaurants, but if you want to buy some jewellery, cheap T-shirts, boutique clothes, yoga wear and surf gear, then the whole Batu Bolong area is packed with shops. Walk up and down this street, and you’ll find loads of shops. Getting to Batu Bolong is easy as there’s a quick shortcut between Pererenan and Canggu central if you’re using Go-Jek on a scooter.

4. Daily workout at the best gyms in Pererenan

Let’s be honest here. All you have to do is look around, and you’ll see all the beautiful people with sculptured bodies in Pererenan. The reason is that Canggu and Pererenan have some of the best gyms in Bali, such as Victory Fitness, Obsidium, and The Wrong Gym, which offer a vast selection of weights and cardio equipment. Plus, just outside Pererenan, there are gyms like Bull, SOMA and Nirvana Strenght. Read this for more gyms in Seminyak and Canggu.

Pererenan FAQs

Where is Pererenan?

Pererenan is about a 10-minute scooter ride north of central Canggu. If you’re currently in Canggu, you can quickly get there via a scooter. However, if you’re in a car, allow about 309 minutes due to traffic conditions along Jalan Raya Canggu. See the map below:

Can beginners surf in Pererenan?

Yes, they can, but they should go out with a surf instructor at high tide and when the surf is small. There are rocks at the bottom of the surf break, which can be hazardous, so caution is recommended. If the surf is large and you are keen to get out for a lesson, I do recommend heading to Batu Bolong just south of Pererenan, about a 10-minute walk along the beach. Here, you’ll find perfect conditions for beginners.

Pererenan or Canggu, what is the difference?

There’s a vast difference between the two areas. Canggu is hectic with lots of shops, cafés and hotels or villas. In comparison, Pererenan remains relatively quiet and retains a rustic charm. Some streets of Pererenan are lovely and may resemble some quiet suburban streets you see back in Australia. However, developers are slowly creeping north, and the landscape of this quaint area is evolving at a rapid pace, much like Canggu and other areas of Bali. The mix of people at Pererenan is more digital nomads and expats, while Canggu’s mix is more tourists and people who stay in Bali for a couple of months. One common unifying factor is that both areas are located on the beach, close to each other, and offer family-friendly villa accommodations.

What’s the best way to get around Pererenan and nearby areas?

The best way to explore Pererenan and the Canggu area is by scooter – it’s 100% the best option. If you want to travel by car, expect long delays and massive traffic queues. Plus, a scooter allows you to duck in and out of the small alleyways nimbly and park quickly. For longer day trips, such as to Tanah Lot, Balian, or Uluwatu with the kids, a car and driver are recommended. If you can’t drive a scooter, then use Go-Jek, which is the equivalent of Uber.
